Guest House: Activities and Leisure | | | |
... some leisure activities on the island
Golfing: Arran has seven golf courses. One is in Whiting Bay, where
visitors find not only a warm welcome but also a challenging course.
Our guests can ask for a Green-fee discount voucher at arrival. The
Brodick and Shiskine Club have each a Pro and a shop, while Sannox is
very picturesque. The Lochranza course is sometimes quite crowded
(mainly with deer between the tee and the holes). Machrie is
comfortably flat and sports a really good tea-room, while Lamlash has
some steep parts and a famous restaurant with a well-stocked bar (also
open to non-golfers). And Shiskine Golf Club is unique with its 12 hole
links course looking over the Kilbrannan Sound on the Kintyre
peninsula. There is a Driving Range installed. The Arran golf clubs
offer an Island Golf Pass which allows you to play one round on each of
the seven courses with 20% discount. This pass is valid for 12 months,
so it is really worthwhile for every golfer.
Walking: the second most important recreational activity according to
our visitors. Many paths and ways invite to interesting walks, some
themed, eg walks into Arrans past (Giants Grave, Kings Cave, Standing
Stones of Machrie, etc) or walks along the shore and into the forests
to see spectacular waterfalls, which are usually not too difficult.
Then there are some serious tours available, Goatfell, Cir Mhor and
other mountains or cross country walks along glens, depopulated long
ago, where a snake or a Golden Eagle might show itself off. An Outdoor
Shop in Claddach (Brodick) can always supply the necessary clothing,
mapping and other important tools.
For non-golfers and non-walkers (or for a change) the island offers a
plethora of further activities like crazy golf, pony trekking, mountain
bike hire, cayaking, paragliding, fishing, off road cart driving and
many more exhausting or relaxing activities.
Brodick Castle with its famous gardens and Rhododendron collection is
open to visitors, as is the well stocked Heritage Museum. Many shops
all over the Island invite you to look, admire and buy local crafts.
Two large and many small galleries cater for your artistic tastes and
an extremely well stocked Art Shop (at the Burnside Gallery in Brodick)
provides the artist on holidays (as well as the many resident artists)
with every imaginable tool.
Last, but not least we also recommend the Isle of Arran Whisky
Distillery in Lochranza, which has now a absolutely sensational
10-year-old Malt, a good restaurant, a well stocked shop and a
tremendous tour to see how the «Water of live» is distilled. Arran has
also its own little Brewery which produces four different often
acclaimed beers, have a visitor gallery and also a shop with
interesting beer-related goods in Claddach near Brodick. Not to be
forgotten is the home of the famous «Arran Aromatics» brand for
toiletries at the Homefarm near Brodick and the Chocolate Makers in
Brodick. Another outstanding shop is the Sheepskin Shop near Machrie.
They present a superb range of knitted clothings and gifts.
A
special mention goes to the Burnside Gallery in Brodick. It is one of
the truly esteemed Art Galleries in Scotland's West. Regularly changing
exhibitions, well-booked workshops and other attractions make this a
thriving gem on Arran. And not to forget, they house a wellstocked
Artists Supply shop, so if you forgot your watercolours, your drawing
block, even you easel, the staff there can help you.
If all this is not yet enough entertainment, a look into the local
newspapers, the «Arran Voice» or the «Arran Banner», will show the
visitor that there is a lot more to enjoy. Arran sports not only a
drama festival and regular ceilidh's, folk music events and lots of
musical entertainment, it is as well often frequented by mainland bands
and performers, including the Scottish Opera.
All this offers make Arran an ideal all-year destination. | |
